Since registering for this program, I can count on one hand how often I have used a Jump Drive. Dropbox is an online jump drive. You are given 2 Gb of space for free (very generous) and can get more space by inviting people into Dropbox or by paying for more. The really nice thing about dropbox is that anything you save into “My Dropbox” automatically syncs to the Internet and whatever PC you have Dropbox installed to. Please give this program a try. And if you register and download the program with this link, both you and I will get extra Dropbox space. :)
Most of you are probably using Internet Explorer because it came with Windows and that is all you know how to use. I highly recommend changing this habit. I frequently use these two browsers:
FIREFOX. Hands down, this is probably one of the best web browsers you could use. It is fast, safe and more stable than Internet Explorer. You can also add mini programs to it called extensions. Extensions make Firefox very customizable. For example, I use an extension called Fast Video Downloader that when clicked allows you to download videos from Youtube. Once you download the videos, you can put them in Power Points, watch them on your PC, or sync them to your iPood.
GOOGLE CHROME. Another extremely fast and reliable browser. Probably one of the fastest I have ever used. It makes the google experience even more wonderful. Google mail, Google Docs, Youtube and many other google products run faster and better in Chrome. I advise everybody to use Chrome. I recommend running this program once you have installed Chrome. It Anonymizes your Chrome experience because it blocks Chrome from sending your user data back to Google.
Too often I hear the excuse “I don’t have PowerPoint/Word/Excel.” There are so many alternatives to the Micro$oft Office Suite today. Micro$oft charges hundreds of dollars to do what many programs now do for free. One such program is called Open Office.
You can download Open Office for free here. It is available for Windows, Macs, and Linux. It is almost identical to the Micro$oft Office Suite and is just as good. Just make sure that when you are finished with your work, you hit Save As and tell it to save as a Microsoft compatible format. Otherwise you will not be able to open your work here at school.
If you have any questions, feel free to send an email.
Those of you who do not have Micro$oft Office often worry that the work you do at home will not open at school. Macs and Linux machines save what you type in a different format and sometimes even Microsoft Works gives us problems. I discovered a great (and free) program that will help you with your school work. It is called SoftMaker Office 2006. This program is a lightweight Micro$oft Word and Excel program. It has spell checking, grammar checking and other important features. You can download it here. I played around with it for a while and I was very impressed.
You have to be careful when you save your work. Make sure you follow these steps:
- File
- Save As
- Microsoft Word 97/2000 (*.doc)
That’s all. Micro$oft Word and Excel for free.
I like the sound of that. Let me know what you think in the comments.
Here are some games I thought you might like to check out. Instant classics and a lot of fun. My record for Nanaca Crash is 11439.88 M. :)
